WHO?

Dykemint, the brainchild of the nonbinary lesbian Fi Black and the helping hands of their partner Lita Bacus,is a slow sustainable anime inspired fashion brand that pushes the boundaries of creativity with its chaotic maximalist collage compositional pieces and unboxable aesthetic. As a counter to the sphere of fast fashion, Fi utilizes sustainably thrifted and preloved materials, their wearable art pieces are never duplicated.

Hailing from Walla Walla, Washington, by way of Delaware, Fi started as a crafty gluegun kid hand-sewing felt wallets and making cosplays. Their pandemic venture saw them take up the mantle of making quirky earrings for lesbians by lesbians, snowballing into cooking up clothes. Dykemint’s mission was and is to make something unique for it to be owned by one individual sharing a common interest. Making nerdy clothes with designs never repeated is the ultimate test of creativity.

In addition to original one-of-one designs, each Dykemint drop features size-inclusive selections, designs range from XS to 6X. Fi always prioritizes re-upping sizes, that fast fashion doesn’t prioritize, when they sell out. They are committed to ensuring patrons of all sizes can find a piece that celebrates their body and their special interests.

“I create for the niche, for people in the fan culture and subculture, the cryptids and the daywalkers”, Fi says of their work. “One day dykemint is for the goths, then it's kidcore, then y2k, then scene kid, then boho chic, but it's always Dykemint. A kaleidoscope patchwork of styles and genres and franchises.”

Every aspect of Dykemint is meticulously handcrafted, showcasing an unparalleled level of dedication and passion poured into each creation.

It’s so much more fun to diversify and give thrifted clothing, fabrics, and items a second life - one full of color and uniqueness that will never be recreated.

I think of each piece as a composition, how designs fit in with each thrifted piece, what each base piece of clothing is asking to have on it. Very material relations, I let the clothes speak to me. That's my favorite thing, where I'm just like, “Yeah, I really went off with this piece.” Usually a statement made after finishing up a creative process that required so many elements and redirections that it takes my original vision and truly transforms it into something amazing.

I create pieces to grab others at a soul level.

As a nonbinary, butch lesbians, who is creating art in a very male dominated industry, it's important for everyone to be feel cool and confident and want to wear my pieces. To appreciate my viewpoint and peerspective I bring to the DIY streetwear space and think, this is great. I want people to be proud to wear clothes that could only be made by a dyke.

I just don't want to make things that are boring. I want people to get a laugh out of my clothes but also feel like the only one in the room wearing something like it. I treat every single piece as its own composition and create one-of-one wearable art, or garments.

I hope that I help people feel confident and that they, they feel like they have their own like personal, personal luxury in their niche.

Inspired by anime and nerdy influenced streetwear, I use a variety of handmade manufactured practices like screen printing, heat transfer, sewing, serging, dying, all entirely by hand.

The pieces and fabrics that I find safe from salvage could have just ended up in a landfill, but instead they are brought to life as cute nerdcore. Fuck Fast Fashion. Buy Custom. Shop DYKEMINT.
